“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” – Kurt Vonnegut
Our Focus
To reduce hunger, poverty and waste, our focus is on our local community.
Feeding the Community
* We have partnered with local Minnesotan regenerative and organic farmers to provide community members with healthy, nutrient dense, whole foods.
* Cottage Law Goods providers will be able to sign up for space to sell within our marketplace, during business hours, via a calendar on our website or within our store.
* OtterCare understands that healthy local foods can be cost prohibitive to some people. This is why we will have food shelf hours throughout the days we are open. Everyday. Just check in at the register island and provide your Name, number of people in household, and proof of address to an employee or volunteer. Unfortunately, when we first open the food shelf we will only be able to help those within the Fergus Falls community.
Lifting the Community
* Local artists, creators can sell their fairs directly to the community all year round, on consignment. This allows families to have additional income streams throughout the year, not just during farmer’s market and festival season!
* Thriving local businesses are the cornerstone of strong towns. When you spend a dollar at a locally owned establishment, that dollar will circulate throughout the local economy 2-4 times more than a dollar spent at non-local businesses.
* Our tool lending library will be available for community members to rent, free of charge, tools that would normally be considered too niche or cost prohibitive to own individually. Through sharing large purchases, we can help people maintain their property and items without breaking the bank.
Educating the Community
* Fix-It-Clinics will be held at least quarterly. Local Volunteers will help community members repair or mend their goods instead of throwing them away and buying new. Not only does this help keeps thousands of pounds of goods out of the landfill, it saves money too!
*OtterCare, in partnership with our farmers and community members will hold regular self sufficiency and sustainability classes or lectures. These could include skills workshops like gardening, sewing, foraging, etc., or lectures on a variety or sustainability topics.
